Boiler & Maintenance Utility Operator

First District Association is a dairy cooperative that manufactures wholesome dairy products from high quality milk supplied from our family farms located in Minnesota and Wisconsin. We operate several manufacturing facilities on-site with state-of-the-art equipment. The Boiler Operator’s responsibility is to provide Boiler Operator duties and / or Maintenance Utility Operator duties.  This position will cover absences in either department and hours will vary each week depending on business needs.  A State of Minnesota 2nd Class B Boilers License, or 1st Class B boilers license is required.  This position is not part of the Boiler Shadow program.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide operational support as a Boiler Operator to cover absences of other shift operators.
  • Provide operational support as a Maintenance Operator to cover absences of other shift operators.
  • When not covering open shifts, perform duties as assigned.
  • Participate in all training required of Boiler Operators and Maintenance Operators.
  • Complete work orders in a timely manner and manage time throughout shifts efficiently.
  • Adhere to cGMP practices and all other food safety requirements.
  • Adhere to wearing all required PPE while performing duties including gloves, fall harnesses, respirators, eyewear and masks.
  • Adhere to all safety programs including LOTO, confined space, forklift and scissor lift safety, roof and ladder safety and elevated work.

Boiler Operator Role

  • Monitor and maintain the facility’s high pressure boiler systems.
  • Support the site by ensuring the safe and proper operation of boilers.
  • Maintain logs, data sheets, and all necessary paperwork related to boiler operations.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance work on boiler systems.
  • Perform all required tests and inspections.
  • Ensures compliance with federal and state laws and works within all regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare boilers and related equipment for state and insurance inspections.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the boiler room.
  • Reads and interprets technical manuals and works within the CMMS work order system.
  • Assist maintenance operators, as needed.

Maintenance

  • Provide preventative, predictive, and emergency maintenance on all equipment and systems
  • Works safely, efficiently and professionally with site operators and management.
  • Troubleshoot failed equipment including compressed air, steam, hydraulics, pneumatics, refrigeration, water and basic electrical systems.  Work closely with other operators, supervisors and electricians to resolve complex issues.
  • Provide preventative maintenance to motors, valves, pumps, gearboxes, compressors and other general equipment.
  • Read technical manuals, interpret instructions and performs performance tracking through the assignment and closure of completed work through the CMMS system.
  • Provide professional and courteous support to all areas of the facility as needed.
  • Communicate with operations management through company provided cell phone and two-way radios while on the site.
  • Respond to inquiries and emergency issues timely; when on call, respond in person as needed within a reasonable amount of time.
  • May be assigned day shifts, night shifts, scheduled weekends and overtime as needed.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Must have a current MN State 1st Class B Hight Pressure Boilers License or possess a 2nd Class B high Pressure Boiler License with the ability to obtain MN State 1st Class B High Pressure Boilers License within six months from date of hire.
  • Must have a MN State Class D Water Operator license or ability to obtain license.
  • Able to maintain certification of applicable Boilers License and Water Operator Certificate.
  • Experience troubleshooting and maintaining boiler room and other mechanical equipment.
  • Previous preventative maintenance experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of OSHA safety guidelines.
  • Ability to weld / perform basic metal fabrication using TIG a plus, but not required.

 

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds frequently
  • Occasionally it may be required to lift more than 50 pounds with the assistance of other staff or safety equipment.
  • Continuously walks, stands and climbs stairs.
  • Sits, bends, twists and stoops frequently during the day.
  • Performs occasional work in confined spaces, tight spaces and while on ladders, in harnesses or on lifts.

 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed in varying degrees of temperature; cold in winter, windy on rooftops, hot in summer, and in some towers in temperatures over 120 degrees Fahrenheit for periods of 20 minutes.
  • Climate outside impacts the working environment and therefore, operators are provided with safety gear and uniforms to either warm or chill the body to maintain reasonable body temperature.
